HOT TIP: 3 Hints for Opening Communication with Lost Loves

Hot Tip IconOnce you’ve found your lost love online, it’s certainly important to proceed with caution. After all, you haven’t seen the person you loved long ago in quite some time. There’s no way of knowing what’s going on in his or her life now. Chances are, he or she will be happy to hear from you — but you don’t know that for a fact. It’s important to stop and think about how you’re going to open communication before you send the first message.

Tip 1: Verify that You’ve Found the Right Person

Before sharing personal details with someone you’ve located online, make sure that the person you’ve found really is the person you’re looking for. If you’ve found a social networking site profile, you might be able to rely on the person’s photo to make a positive identification. Otherwise, make sure to include a few questions in your initial message — that aren’t overly personal — that only your old boyfriend or girlfriend could answer.

Tip 2: Don’t Profess Undying Love in an Email

When trying to establish communication with your old boyfriend or girlfriend after a successful lost love search, it’s not a good idea to dash off a message professing your undying devotion after decades of being apart. At worst, you’ll sound like a stalker and at best you’ll have to deal with the embarrassment of finding out that your lost love is now happily married.

Tip 3: Be Friendly, Not Aggressive

You can’t assume that someone you haven’t seen in years will be dying to jump on a plane and fly across the country to see you the moment they hear from you. When you haven’t seen or heard from someone in quite some time, it might take a while of chatting online to move up to phone calls or face-to-face visits. You can even use your private email account on Reunion.com so that there is a comfort barrier between you and this other person. Make sure that the messages you send to your lost love are friendly and upbeat and that they don’t come across as desperate or overly aggressive.

Hot Tip: Sharing Family Favorite Recipes

Hot Tip IconFood is an integral part of gatherings, so if you’re looking for some fun family food ideas for an upcoming reunion, why not ask each family member to bring their favorite childhood recipe?

A family potluck delivers an interesting mix of food that’s likely to spark conversation about how the recipe became a family favorite. As you chat about the origins of each dish, you’ll probably end up reminiscing about past gatherings and meal traditions across the generations of your family.

You can use these old family recipes to create a fun and cherished keepsake for each person who attends the reunion. Ask each family member to bring the recipe they used with them to the event, and use the recipes to create a souvenir family recipe book commemorating the event. You might want to have attendees email their recipes to you ahead of time. That way, you could compile the dishes and have a booklet put together that each person can take home from the event.

If you don’t want to collect recipes ahead of time, just have each person bring several copies to the event. You can pass them out and let each person assemble his or her own collection, or gather them and create a booklet to distribute to the attendees following the event. No matter how the family recipe booklet gets compiled, it’s sure to be a great tool for sharing family favorite recipes across the generation.

Hot Tip: Get Involved in Your College Alumni Association

Hot Tip IconWish you had an opportunity to stay in touch with college classmates between major reunion years? Consider getting involved in your college alumni association. Many schools have active networking organizations designed to help graduates keep in touch with each other and stay connected with the institution. Alumni associations offer a terrific way to connect and network with people in your community who attended the same school as you, independent of graduation year.

Contact your school’s office of alumni relations and let them know that you want to get involved. If there’s not an active alumni chapter in your area, your interest just might be the spark that gets one going.

A great asset for reconnecting with old college friends and students is through Reunion.com. Just perform a People Search for any of your old classmates and friends to reconnect, or check out your rivals and see what’s happened to them. (And no, we won’t tell if you’re hoping their bald and/or fat.)

Strong alumni networks benefit schools and graduates alike! After all, graduates who remain in consistent contact with their alma maters are helpful in networking situations and are more inclined to make monetary donations and refer others to attend the school in the future. But by having the resources at Reunion.com at your fingertips, you can make your work with alumni networks much easier!

Hot Tip: Choosing Attire for Your College Reunion

Hot Tip IconGot a college reunion coming up? It’s only natural to want to look your best when getting together with college classmates you haven’t seen in years. Figuring out what to wear is often one of the first considerations that crosses people’s minds when making plans to attend a reunion. After all, you haven’t seen many of your college friends in years, and you might not have an opportunity to see them again until the next formal gathering for college alumni from your school.

Follow these tips for choosing attire for the big event, and you’ll be sure to look your best when your reunion rolls around.

  • Check the Calendar of Events Before Choosing Clothes: Make sure you verify the types of activities on the agenda for your reunion before you go out and buy clothing to wear to the event. You won’t want to show up for the reunion with only a formal dress and then find out that the big event is an outdoor crawfish boil or fish fry. Make sure to take one flattering and appropriate outfit for each event that’s scheduled during your reunion gathering.
  • Dress Appropriately for Your Age: If you see outfits that remind you of how you dressed when you were in school, don’t give in to the temptation to buy them for your reunion. You don’t want to look like you’re trying to be a kid when you get together with your college classmates. Wear clothes that reflect the person you’ve matured into, and make sure the outfits you select are age-appropriate and flattering.
  • Keep Packing Considerations in Mind: If you’re traveling to your reunion, be sure to consider packing limitations when selecting attire for the event. Choose fabrics that will hold up well when packed and that won’t require a great deal of care once you arrive at your destination. You want to spend your time socializing with your college friends, not struggling to get wrinkles out of a linen jacket that’s been crammed in a suitcase!

Secrets to Successful People Searches

Having a hard time finding that old roommate, relative, or relationship?

Reunion.com’s People Search is an amazingly helpful tool, and these tips can help provide better results:

  1. Check the spelling.
The most common mistake involves accidentally mixing up letters in a person’s name. Even if you’re sure it looks right, carefully double-check your typing. Certain spellings like Brian and Bryan, or nicknames like Richard changing to Rick, can also hinder successful results—so try various options when searching.
  2. Look for family.
Your friend may not be available, but a brother, sister, or parents could help you in your search.
  3. Browse the Class Lists.
If you know where your friend went to school, check out Reunion.com’s high school class listings. And as with Tip #2, a former classmate may be able to help with your search.
  4. Browse by location.
Know the city your friend is living in? You can browse Members by zip code on Reunion.com.
